Pilates may not be new—remember Rachel doing it on Friends?—but it's experiencing a major moment.

Here in the UAE, Instagram-worthy Reformer studios and the wellness boom have everyone talking.

Maybe we're finally realizing that Pilates delivers both an amazing stretch and solid workout. Add an iced matcha, and you've got the ideal weekend ritual.

Understanding Pilates

Pilates is a full-body, low-impact exercise system focused on building strength, balance, and flexibility.

Created nearly a century ago when German inventor Joseph Pilates opened his first New York studio in the 1920s, it gained popularity in the 90s and is now having another major resurgence.

As we embrace more mindful living, Pilates fits perfectly with its emphasis on intentional movement, improved breathing, and mental clarity.

The Mat vs. Reformer Breakdown

Mat Pilates happens exactly where you'd expect—on a mat similar to those used for yoga. Reformer Pilates uses specialized equipment featuring a sliding carriage, pulley straps, and adjustable springs for customizable resistance.

Elle, founder of Posture with two Dubai studios, explains the key differences: "The Reformer is often the most recognizable, 'trendy' workout because of its moving carriage and springs.

It adds resistance, making exercises more accessible for beginners while offering greater challenges as you progress. Mat Pilates strips it back to bodyweight only, so you rely entirely on your own strength and control."

Reformer Pilates offers a wider range of movements. The carriage and straps enable more dynamic and complex exercises, especially when combined with props like the 'box' or Pilates ball.

Mat Pilates focuses on the same core stability and precise movement but with a somewhat more limited selection of positions.

What They Share

Both methods stem from Joseph Pilates' original principles. As Elle notes, "The magic is that both come from the same foundation.

Whether you're lying on the mat or moving on the Reformer, you should always be working through Joseph Pilates' original six principles: control, concentration, centering, breath, precision, and flow."

"Both methods challenge your strength, mobility, and body awareness. At Posture, we emphasize that the apparatus enhances your practice, but the method itself remains consistent throughout our teaching."

Is Reformer Right for You?

While both types offer incredible physical and mental benefits, Reformer Pilates can deliver faster strength gains and full-body toning thanks to added resistance.

"The Reformer offers sculpting through resistance—think lengthened muscles, strengthened core, and definition, especially in your arms and legs," says Elle.

Reformer Pilates is also excellent for injury recovery or rehabilitation, as the carriage provides additional guidance and support throughout workouts.

The Case for Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates excels at building foundational core strength and improving posture, balance, and flexibility.

Without equipment support, mat Pilates engages your core muscles—abs and lower back—in virtually every position and movement to maintain stability.

You might not feel the same burn as in a Reformer class, but you'll still develop solid, steady core strength that can be enhanced with more complex moves and advanced classes. For beginners, this makes an excellent starting point.

"Neither is 'better'—they simply train the body in different ways," Elle explains. "When taught together as part of the full system, you get the most powerful results.

I personally love mat work and believe it's the foundation for the whole system."

Cost Considerations

Mat Pilates offers the most budget-friendly entry point. You can roll out a yoga mat or even a towel and follow free YouTube classes—perfect for beginners or those watching their spending.

In studio settings, mat classes typically cost less than Reformer sessions due to lower equipment expenses. In Dubai, mat classes range from 90-130 AED per session, while Reformer prices start around 150 AED per class.

Many studios offer class bundles or subscription models that reduce the per-class cost.

Whether you choose mat or Reformer, you're investing in a practice that builds both physical strength and mental clarity. The best choice is simply the one you'll stick with consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

plus minus

Which is more effective for results: reformer or mat Pilates?

Reformer Pilates generally provides a more effective workout, helping to build strength in my arms, shoulders, and back more quickly than mat work. However, I find mat Pilates to be more challenging for the core, particularly for the abdominal muscles.
