Namibia’s mixed martial arts (MMA) team is preparing for one of the biggest challenges in their careers: the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Youth World Championships.

Set to take place in Abu Dhabi from July 21-27, this prestigious event is expected to be the largest youth amateur MMA competition in history.

With athletes from across the globe vying for gold, Namibia’s team is hard at work ensuring they are up to the task.

Here's a closer look at the team’s preparation, their challenges, and what lies ahead as they step into the global MMA arena.

A Historic Competition

This year’s IMMAF Youth World Championships promises to be a milestone in MMA history. With fighters traveling from all corners of the world, the event will showcase the future stars of mixed martial arts.

For Namibia’s contingent, this is an opportunity not just to represent their nation, but to make a statement on the international stage.

Team coach Carlos de Sousa expressed confidence in the squad, acknowledging the level of competition they’ll face. “It’s a major event with elite fighters from across the world.

To compete at this level, you must be thoroughly prepared, and as proud sons of the Land of the Brave, we’ll give it our all and aim to bring medals back home,” he said.

Intense Preparations to Stay Competitive

For the Namibian team, preparation has been anything but easy.

Fresh off their recent success at the African MMA Championships in Angola, the athletes are sticking to a demanding training schedule designed to boost their skills and fitness.

According to De Sousa, balancing recovery and readiness has been a challenge. “The preparations are tough for the boys.

They’ve just returned from the African MMA Championships in Angola, where they qualified for next month’s World Championships. There’s very little time to rest because of the tight schedule,” he noted.

Despite the grueling routine, the coach remains optimistic about the team’s ability to compete. The fighters, including Waylon Beukes, Stefan Kuhn, Yordanis Sampre, and Shange Kamwi, are training harder than ever under De Sousa’s guidance.

The Fight for Sponsorship

While the team is focused on their physical and mental preparations, logistical hurdles remain. Unfortunately, the upcoming trip to Abu Dhabi is entirely self-funded at this time.

De Sousa shared his concerns about the financial strain, explaining that the team has yet to secure confirmed sponsorships.

“We’ve received promises of assistance from private entities and individuals, but nothing has been confirmed in writing yet. All logistical arrangements are being handled by us,” he said.

The lack of sponsorship poses an additional challenge, as it places significant pressure on the team to fund their travel and accommodations.

With time running short, securing support is critical to ensuring the fighters can focus solely on competing at their best.

Proud Sons of Namibia Prepare to Shine

Despite the challenges, Namibia’s MMA fighters remain committed to their goals. They’re not just heading to Abu Dhabi to participate; they’re determined to leave their mark on the global stage.

The team’s dedication and resilience reflect the true spirit of the Land of the Brave.

To ensure they are fully prepared, the team plans to arrive in Abu Dhabi ahead of the competition to acclimatize to the weather and finalize their last-minute preparations.

Support Namibia’s MMA Team

The IMMAF Youth World Championships represent a major opportunity for Namibia to showcase its talent on an international platform.

However, the team’s success depends not only on their skills and preparation but also on the support of their community.

If you’d like to support Namibia’s MMA team or know an organization that can assist with sponsorship, now is the time to step up and lend a helping hand.

Together, we can help these athletes not only reach Abu Dhabi but also achieve their dreams of bringing home medals.
