Since March, approximately 220,000 individuals have joined Pure Gym as indoor facilities began reopening after lockdown.

The company now boasts about 1.6 million members, which is 94% of its membership level from December 2019—prior to the pandemic—and an increase from 81% in March this year.

On Thursday, the business announced that it had opened 15 new gyms in the first half of 2021, with all but two located in the UK.

Membership sign-ups at these new locations have been faster than the pre-pandemic average.

All 506 Pure Gym locations are now operational with “minimal” Covid-19 restrictions.

Most of these sites reopened in April and early May.

This recovery helped the company shift from a difficult first quarter—when it was losing money—to profitability in the second quarter.

Chief Executive Humphrey Cobbold stated, “The PureGym Group is recovering swiftly after an extremely challenging first quarter when all our gyms were closed, and we were losing over half a million pounds per day.

“The pandemic underscored the importance of gyms as essential community assets, and we were thrilled to welcome our members back upon reopening.

“Thanks to the dedication of our staff across the UK, Denmark, and Switzerland, we have made substantial progress in ensuring gym safety, rebuilding our membership base, and restoring profitability, which reached commendable levels in June and July under the circumstances.”

After strong performance in its new gyms in the UK, Denmark, and Switzerland, the group plans to open another dozen locations across the UK this year and accelerate its expansion in 2022.

Additionally, it plans to launch its first four sites in Saudi Arabia—marking its initial venture outside Europe—and three gyms in the US later this year or early next year.

Mr. Cobbold concluded, “While Europe remains our primary market, we see potential to offer affordable fitness in other regions as well.”
