Riyadh has been awarded Global Active City (GAC) certification, becoming the first city in the Middle East to receive the designation.

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) said the certification recognises the capital’s work to promote healthier lifestyles, physical activity, and community wellbeing for everyone.

What Global Active City certification recognises

The Global Active City designation is awarded to cities that show measurable progress in building environments that make active living easier and more inclusive, supported by systems and standards that encourage movement across all segments of society.

Partners behind the certification

RCRC credited key partners including the Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Sports for All Federation, and noted that the certification process involved collaboration with more than 20 relevant entities.

The certification sits under the Active Well-being Initiative, founded by TAFISA and Evaleo, with support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

A citywide strategy that connects health, movement, and urban design

According to RCRC, Riyadh’s approach brings together sport, health, transport, education, and urban planning to create a more supportive environment for everyday activity. The work includes expanding access to:

  • Public spaces that encourage movement

  • Walking and cycling paths

  • Sports facilities

  • Community programs designed to inspire active lifestyles

The commission linked this progress to Saudi Vision 2030 and the Quality of Life Program, positioning active living as a core part of the city’s long-term development.

How residents can make the most of a more active city

An “active city” only matters if people can use it. Simple ways to build momentum:

  • Aim for a daily movement baseline (a walk, a cycle, or structured training)

  • Combine cardio with strength training for better long-term health outcomes

  • Use group sessions or community programs to stay consistent

If you want structured training options, explore gyms in Riyadh and practical training guidance in the Fitness Hub.
