A recent report by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) has highlighted the increasing rates of obesity in Saudi Arabia.

According to the 2024 Health Determinants Statistics Publication, released on Monday, 23.1% of Saudis aged 15 and above are classified as obese, while 45.1% are overweight.

Concerns About Children's Health

The data is no less alarming for younger age groups. Among children aged 2 to 14, 14.6% are obese, and 33.3% are overweight. This points to a significant need for greater health education and initiatives aimed specifically at children.

Unhealthy Eating Habits

The report also studied the dietary behaviors of adults. It found that only 10.2% of individuals aged 15 and older meet the recommended intake of five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

By contrast, 84.8% consume just one to four servings daily, and 5% do not eat fruits and vegetables at all.

Public Health Issues in Focus

The findings, derived from self-reported data, national health surveys, and 2024 population estimates, provide a clear picture of the nation's health challenges.

The report highlights the government's dedication to identifying and addressing public health issues across all age groups.

With this information in hand, efforts will now turn toward encouraging healthier lifestyles and raising awareness about proper nutrition to address the Kingdom's growing issues with obesity and poor dietary habits.
