Dr. Dina Altayeb, an experienced triathlete, is determined to make her mark in the sports world, tackling one race at a time.
Her recent participation in the renowned Challenge Roth in Germany this July marks just the beginning of a packed racing itinerary that will take her to Canada, Spain, and eventually to the 70.3 Ironman Championship in New Zealand.
Reflecting on her experience at Challenge Roth, Altayeb described it as unforgettable. “The energy was electrifying, and the crowd’s encouragement was overwhelming.
It’s a race that indeed lives up to its reputation, featuring a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride, and a 42 km marathon run, all known for excellent organization. It’s a significant undertaking, requiring a nine-month training commitment.”
Altayeb, who has over two decades of experience as a periodontist and implantologist, praised the warm and enthusiastic German culture she experienced at Challenge Roth, which had been a dream event for her for years.
“The entire community in Roth fully embraces the race. It’s truly a town-wide celebration,” she shared.
Although the language barrier was a slight challenge, Altayeb managed to communicate effectively with the locals, showcasing her adaptability and resourcefulness.
With a full racing calendar ahead, Altayeb is focused on her upcoming events in the months to come.
“I plan to gradually build my fitness through smaller events leading up to my major races,” she explained, highlighting her strategic approach.
“Ironman Canada holds sentimental value for me, as it was where I began in 2005. This year marks the last event in Penticton, so I want to cherish the memories,” she added.
However, her ultimate aim is the 70.3 Ironman Championship in New Zealand in December. “Qualifying for this race was a dream realized.
New Zealand is a breathtaking country, and I eagerly anticipate the race there,” said Altayeb.
She intends to arrive early in New Zealand to adjust to the time zone, study the weather, and familiarize herself with the terrain, demonstrating her dedication to thorough preparation.
Beyond her personal achievements, Altayeb is passionate about the growing participation of women in sports within Saudi Arabia.
“It’s truly inspiring to witness the empowerment of women and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
Sports bring happiness, a healthy mind and body, and ultimately contribute to a more productive society,” she said.
“My future goal in triathlon is to continue competing, striving to improve as an athlete every day while maintaining a healthy balance between training, work, and family.”
With a strong message for young Saudi women aspiring to follow in her footsteps, Altayeb concluded, “Take the first step, commit to your goals, and pursue your passion.
There has never been a better time to get involved in sports.”
Altayeb plans to continue mentoring aspiring Saudi athletes, sharing her experience and guiding them to excel in athletics.
She has completed 22 full Ironman races and over 100 races in total.
She holds the distinction of being the first Arab female and Saudi national to qualify and compete in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, a feat achieved in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023.
Altayeb is also the first Saudi to qualify and compete in the Half Ironman Championship multiple times, paving the way for other Saudi women in sports.
