Thinking about hitting the gym? Did you make a New Year’s resolution to do so?

A study by the National Institute of Health suggests that by this time next year, only 58% of people will stick with it.

Photojournalist Kristi Harper examined why so many struggle to maintain their commitment.

It’s easy to let those New Year’s resolutions to get healthier drift away. But how can you make fitness a long-term habit?

Ali True Smith, owner of True Balance Studios in Towson, Maryland, has tips for setting yourself up to achieve lasting fitness and activity.

"I realized this was the only thing that would hold me accountable to take care of myself," says Ali.

With a background in fitness since the age of 15, Ali played lacrosse and studied exercise physiology and kinesiology in college. She later became certified in massage therapy and personal training.

Her deep understanding of the human body means she knows how challenging it can be to stick to a consistent workout routine.

"Maybe you took December off because you were sick, injured, or busy," she explains. "Then you jump back in during January, trying to lift weights at the same level as before.

You get too sore, don’t want to return to the gym for a few days, or worse, you get injured. That discouragement can really derail you."

Ali emphasizes the importance of understanding your body’s needs during gym time to help it reach its best potential.

"There’s this all-or-nothing mentality when it comes to working out. People push too hard, too fast, and can’t maintain it.

Finding guidance in proper strength training—focusing on slow, controlled movements and being mindful of how your body and joints are moving—makes a big difference. The goal is to train your muscles in a balanced way.”

To assist others, she created a flip book outlining what to focus on during workouts. The book, available on Amazon or at her studio, helps readers figure out a balance between strength, flexibility, and cardio.

While that might sound overwhelming, Ali believes a well-crafted workout can fit into even the busiest schedules.

"It depends on your personality," Ali advises. "Figure out what works for you by listening to your body and managing your expectations.

Set attainable goals and be kind to yourself—don’t try to do too much too quickly."

Remember, it’s not about jumping in at full speed on day one. Spend the first few weeks building a habit. This approach can significantly increase your chances of keeping your resolution well into the year ahead.
