Snacking often gets a bad reputation when it comes to weight loss, as it can easily lead to extra calories that derail progress.
Yet, when approached strategically, snacking can actually become a powerful tool to boost your results, both in the kitchen and in the gym.
Take Josh Smelser’s impressive transformation, for example. Over 10 months, he shed 60 pounds by incorporating smart snacking alongside a simple, consistent workout routine.
By finding a balance that worked for his lifestyle, including healthy evening treats and quick at-home exercises, Smelser achieved his goals and completely transformed his health.
A Fitness Plan Fine-Tuned for Balance
At 40 years old, Josh was determined to get back in shape and rediscover the better version of himself he felt was missing.
Though he had always enjoyed being active, life’s demands—including a sedentary job and family responsibilities—had gradually led to weight gain and loss of energy. Even tying his shoes left him winded.
Feeling the disconnect between the man in his mirror and the man he wanted to be, Josh set a goal to turn things around by his 40th birthday. But he knew this would require a realistic approach.
Instead of giving up evening snacks entirely—which he found unsustainable in the past—he allowed himself healthy options.
Opting for a mindful approach, Josh experimented with small changes until he struck gold with a nightly treat made from chocolate protein powder, Greek yogurt, and milk, frozen and blended into a delicious “frozen yogurt” dessert.
But he didn’t stop at smarter eating. With limited time for long workouts, Josh focused on “exercise snacks” at home. These quick, intentional bursts of movement fit effortlessly into his day and proved to be as effective as full-length gym sessions.
The Results of Sustainable Choices
By combining portion-controlled meals, nutritious evening snacks, and short but consistent exercise routines, Josh successfully lost 60 pounds and gained back his sense of confidence.
“Looking in the mirror and finally seeing the person I want to be is an amazing feeling,” he shares.
His physical transformation also inspired personal growth in other areas of his life. “Getting in shape has fueled me to improve mentally and spiritually too,” Josh explains.
Through practices like meditation, journaling, and self-reflection, he’s set out on a broader wellness journey.
Josh’s Workout Snack Routine
Josh’s minimalist workout routine underscores how small actions can yield big results.
Following proven studies highlighting the benefits of short exercise bursts, he relied on a straightforward bodyweight regimen that significantly increased his strength.
Here’s how you can replicate his program at home:
- Do a max set of pullups (as many as you can manage).
- Follow with a max set of pushups.
- Rest for 1-2 minutes.
- Do a max set of bodyweight rows (inverted rows).
- Finish with a max set of dips.
Repeat the cycle 3-5 times, resting a few minutes after each round. This routine took Josh’s pullups from 3 to 15 reps per set and doubled his pushups from 15 to 30 reps.
A Lifestyle to Inspire You
Josh Smelser’s transformation shows that sustainable fitness is all about balance and commitment.
Small, consistent habits like smart snacking and daily exercise snacks can help you achieve impressive results without overhauling your entire schedule.
Remember, improving your health doesn’t have to mean giving up the things you enjoy.
By making mindful adjustments that align with your lifestyle, you’ll set yourself up for long-term success. Start small, stay consistent, and rediscover the best version of yourself.
