HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla — Achieving better health is often a top New Year’s resolution, and sticking to it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
“Take it slow and steady. Don’t try to do too much too quickly,” advises Jodi Fleeman, a trainer at the Bob Sierra Family YMCA.
Her main tip for people starting a new fitness routine? Take small, manageable steps.
“Start with one micro-habit and build from there,” Fleeman suggests.
Yaimy Marshall, the executive director at the Bob Sierra YMCA, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that big fitness goals can often feel intimidating.
“Instead of fixating on reaching a specific weight or goal, think about what you can do this month to progress,” Marshall says. “For example, commit to taking a walk today.
If you achieve that, by the end of the week, you might find yourself doing three walks—and that’s a great accomplishment! Breaking goals into smaller steps is what leads to success.”
Gyms typically see a surge of new members at the start of January fueled by fresh enthusiasm. However, by February, the crowd often diminishes.
To prevent this from happening to you, fitness experts recommend finding workouts that you genuinely enjoy.
“Whether it’s a Zumba class, lifting weights, running outdoors, or simply walking, the key is moving your body in a way that feels good for you,” advises Marshall.
Adding movement to your daily routine doesn’t have to be difficult. Fleeman offers some simple ideas to incorporate activity, such as walking longer distances or opting for stairs over elevators.
For those new to fitness, starting with a trainer might be a wise choice.
“Working with a professional can help you learn proper form and technique, boosting your confidence to eventually work out independently,” Fleeman explains.
Experts also encourage shedding the “all or nothing” mindset. Missing a few workouts one week shouldn’t derail your progress; simply pick up where you left off the next week. The goal is to develop long-term healthy habits.
“If you look at the blue zones, where people live the longest, they incorporate natural, consistent movement into their daily routines. Staying active is key to longevity,” says Fleeman.
Lastly, the start of the year is an excellent time to join a gym, as many offer promotional deals.
“For example, our January special includes a $0 joining fee—families can save $75 by signing up in the next couple of weeks,” says Marshall.
The bottom line? Focus on small, achievable goals, find activities you enjoy, and prioritize creating sustainable habits to maintain your health and fitness all year long.
