Jeddah – Mohammed Daouda Tolo, from the Al-Uraija district in Riyadh, has earned a place at the Paris Olympics by setting a new Asian record in shot put.
Tolo's impressive throw of 21.80 meters at the World Athletics Continental Tour Madrid Meeting in June met the Olympic qualifying standard.
The renowned Saudi athlete, affectionately called the “Big Man,” will compete in the men’s shot put event on August 2, aiming to reach the Olympic final on August 3.
Recognized as one of Saudi Arabia’s rising stars, Tolo started his athletics career at the Green Sports Hall with Al-Hala Fitness Center in 2020. He now represents Al-Hilal club.
His notable achievements include winning a silver medal and breaking the Asian record at the Asian Games in October 2023, surpassing India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor by 3 cm.
At 23 years old, Tolo has participated in numerous competitions, such as the Gulf Games, Islamic Games, Arab Championship, and the Asian Championship in Thailand, each contributing to his development.
From the Saudi athletes’ training camp in Normandy, France, ahead of his Olympic debut, Tolo shared his resolve to succeed at the Paris Olympics.
“I need to prove to myself that I deserve to be at such an international event and compete against top athletes,” he said. Despite it being his first Olympics, Tolo is ready for the challenges ahead.
For athletes worldwide, the Olympics represent the peak of their careers.
“I am honored to be part of the Saudi team on this global stage,” Tolo stated. “I’m thrilled that my hard work has paid off, and I made it to the Saudi squad for the Paris Olympics.
This opportunity motivates me to work even harder and contribute to our team’s success. I look forward to making my country proud.”
Tolo expressed his gratitude for the support from the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee, led by Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal and his deputy, Prince Fahd bin Jalawi.
With preparations ramping up, Tolo acknowledges the challenges but remains focused on his goal of Olympic glory.
“Winning a medal will not be easy,” he admitted, adding that challenges fuel his determination. “I’m going to step up and compete for a medal.”
With steadfast dedication and support from the Kingdom, Tolo aims to make a lasting impression at the Paris Olympics, showcasing the spirit of Saudi athletics on the world stage.
