Dr. Ahmad Mohammed Abdul Malik, a family medicine consultant, highlighted a concerning trend in his clinic, where over 60% of child visitors are dealing with obesity.
This rise is attributed to increased food ordering and sedentary lifestyles, underscoring the urgent need to tackle unhealthy eating habits among children.
During the 10th Health Conference in Sharjah, Dr. Ahmad explained that in Kuwait and across the Gulf and UAE, more than 60% of children are affected by obesity, and these numbers are continuing to grow.
He expressed worry about this escalating issue.
In his presentation, Dr. Ahmad criticized the modern habit of frequently ordering food, pointing out that unlike previous generations who might dine out once a week, today's children are ordering meals as many as six to seven times daily.
He warned that this behavior harms the younger generation, noting that many obese children at clinics also report neck and back pain.
To bridge the generational gap, he urged parents to actively manage their children's diets.
He suggested that mothers implement household rules to limit takeout orders, opt for healthier food choices when ordering, and encourage home cooking.
Dr. Ahmad emphasized the importance of establishing healthy behaviors early in life. He remarked that instilling good eating habits in children makes it easier for them to adopt these habits long-term.
He shared a story about a young girl who, from an early age, developed a taste for 70% cocoa dark chocolate and regularly inquired about fruits like bananas and strawberries.
This example illustrates that with proper guidance, children can learn to prefer healthier options.
Additionally, he stressed the value of integrating physical activities into family routines, suggesting that making exercise a collective family activity can promote healthier living.
Dr. Ahmad also advised designating specific days for takeout, balancing convenience with healthier eating choices.
Families are encouraged to focus on nutrition and make deliberate efforts to address the growing health issues facing today's youth.
