The UAE is redefining yoga with a focus on physical wellness and cultural inclusivity.

“We aim to create our own identity for yoga, positioning the UAE, particularly Dubai, as a global retreat hub,” said Ahmed Ibrahim, President of the UAE Yoga Committee and Vice President of the Asian Yogasana Federation.

To celebrate International Day of Yoga 2025, over 35 venues across the UAE are hosting events, with Dubai Frame being among the first to kick off the celebrations on Friday.

Ibrahim highlighted significant government backing and upcoming wellness projects like Therme Dubai, envisioned to become the world’s tallest well-being resort, slated to open in 2028.

“When people think of wellness retreats, Bali or Goa often comes to mind,” said Ibrahim. “We want the UAE to be seen as a major retreat destination. We’re making steady progress and will lead the global wellness scene.”

The committee is currently focused on empowering yoga instructors and centers, aiming to elevate experienced trainers who lack broader platforms or visibility.

Plans are underway to register yoga trainers and centers through the committee’s official website, creating a database for activities such as event participation, style promotion, certification acquisition, and license renewals at lower costs. Full implementation is expected within three months.

Furthermore, a new event titled ‘Dubai Yoga’ will launch during this year’s Dubai Fitness Challenge, with ongoing efforts to incorporate yoga into the educational curriculum.

Supporting Yoga Professionals

Ibrahim acknowledged the financial challenges faced by many yoga trainers. To help, the committee will organize a series of competitions with prize money.

“We need to support these individuals. Many are earning very little,” he said.

The inaugural Asian Yogasana Championship, the first of its kind in the GCC, is scheduled from August 9 to August 11, with more opportunities being planned to provide monetary support and recognition.

“Our goal is to empower instructors through inclusive events that cater to all nationalities. We want to uplift those who are quietly driving the wellness movement,” Ibrahim added.
