Shuaib Ali, a resident of Sharjah, has been diligently attending the gym for the past year. Yet, despite his unwavering commitment, his weight has barely budged.

"I weighed 130kg when I started in August last year. After a strict exercise routine, both indoors and outdoors, I managed to lose only 6 kilograms in a year," Ali explained.

Each day, Ali rises before dawn, laces up his sneakers, and heads to the gym by 6 am.

His workout regimen is intense, involving 45 minutes of exercise, including a 10-minute cardio session.

"I hoped this disciplined routine, combined with a proper diet, would result in significant weight loss," said Nicolas, a freelance fitness trainer who worked with Ali.

"However, Ali's results have been different. I've trained many clients who shed pounds in just 5 to 6 months," Nicolas added.

Despite the lack of visible progress on the scale, Ali remained dedicated to his routine.

"I've read about people losing weight quickly, and it can be discouraging to see no progress. But I'm committed to my health and will continue my efforts," Ali said.

Ali consulted a doctor and was surprised by the findings.

"I learned that I have thyroid disorders. That explained many symptoms I thought were normal," Ali said.

Beyond Diet and Exercise

Dietitians emphasize that weight loss involves more than just diet and exercise. Various complex physiological and lifestyle factors can influence outcomes.

"Cravings and energy expenditure are significantly influenced by psychological factors, including stress, emotional eating, and sleep habits," said Fahmida Jafri, a dietitian-clinical nutritionist at Thumbay University Hospital.

"In addition to lifestyle changes, medical intervention may be required for underlying issues like insulin resistance or thyroid abnormalities."

Hormonal imbalances such as insulin resistance or thyroid conditions can severely hinder weight loss efforts, according to dietitians.

"Despite efforts to reduce food intake and increase physical activity, hypothyroidism results in insufficient thyroid hormone production, slowing metabolism and leading to weight gain," Jafri explained.

"Insulin resistance hampers the body's ability to use glucose for energy effectively, raising blood sugar levels and promoting fat storage, especially in the abdominal area."

Jafri noted that these hormonal issues are more common than typically assumed.

Weight Loss Tips

Aside from health conditions, personal trainer and nutritionist Alain Pigoupa emphasized that appropriate dietary changes and physical exercise are vital for weight loss.

He advised against believing in instant results often glorified on social media, advocating instead for consistency and staying focused.

Do the Right Exercises

"Specific exercises and workouts are necessary for weight loss," said Pigoupa, who lives in Abu Dhabi. "Age and body type play crucial roles in determining the suitable workouts."

Pigoupa mentioned that several factors could hinder weight loss. "Excessive cardio without adequate food intake can lower your metabolism as the body conserves energy."

Avoid Prolonged Sitting

"Long periods of sitting increase the risk of obesity. Stay active with movement breaks throughout the day," advised Pigoupa.

Balanced Eating

Overeating or undereating can hinder weight loss. "Aim for a balanced approach," Pigoupa suggested.

Proper Hydration

"Drinking the right amount of water based on age and body type is essential in a weight loss journey. Stay hydrated to manage weight and support overall health," said Pigoupa.

Rest Well

A proper sleep cycle is crucial for a healthy body. Lack of sleep disrupts hunger hormones, leading to increased appetite and weight gain, Pigoupa noted.

Manage Stress

"Managing stress is vital in today's fast-paced world. Chronic stress raises cortisol levels, making fat loss harder. Find ways to decrease stress," concluded Pigoupa.

By following these tips and understanding the underlying factors affecting weight loss, individuals can achieve more sustainable and healthier outcomes.
