Why Rumble Boxing Is My Workout

My initial venture into group fitness began in 2013 at a place called ilovekickboxing.
Despite its unimpressive website, I was captivated by the workout and the sense of community.
From that point forward, I became hooked on boxing and related workouts. Whenever a new studio or app emerged that allowed me to channel my inner fighter, I was eager to try it out.
Then, in 2017, a completely new boxing studio concept, Rumble Boxing, appeared.
I gave it a try back then, but recently it has become my preferred workout. Here's why I love it so much and what you can expect from a Rumble class.
What Is Rumble?
Rumble Boxing offers an innovative workout that combines boxing circuits with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and strength exercises, all set to specially curated playlists from in-house DJs and accompanied by vibrant lighting.
This combination creates an immersive experience that also serves as an excellent workout.
Founded in New York City, Rumble now boasts locations nationwide and globally, including in Japan, Australia, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Kuwait, and more.
Their signature class is a 45-minute, 10-round session blending cardio and strength training centered around uniquely designed water-filled, teardrop-shaped boxing bags.
These bags are gentler on the joints since they absorb the kinetic energy of each punch, something traditional heavy bags filled with sand can't do.
A trainer instructs the class from a podium, directing both boxing and weight training participants.
Visuals projected on either side of the room illustrate the boxing combinations and exercises for each round.
Each three-minute round aims to build stamina, endurance, speed, and strength in targeted areas, incorporating boxing drills and skills before concluding with a combination round and a high-energy "Rumble."
Why I Enjoy Rumble
Unlike some workouts that drag on, Rumble's 10-round format—five rounds on boxing bags and five in the weight area, with two switches in between—keeps things brisk and engaging.
The energetic instructors, upbeat music, and dynamic visuals ensure you stay fully immersed. One of my favorite Rumble trainers, Kory Flores, is known for her high energy and supportiveness.
She skillfully guides us through both boxing and strength routines. When we hit the peak of a boxing round, she might say, "On a scale of 1 to Fast and The Furious, I need you to go Vin Diesel."
Her quip makes me smile as I focus on the bag and go all out, while the music ramps up and the lights flash in various colors. Rumble perfectly blends exercise and entertainment, creating memorable fitness moments.
Important Considerations About Rumble
First and foremost, this is a boxing-inspired workout—not a place for self-defense or sparring. However, it's an excellent spot to learn boxing basics and get a fantastic workout.
Rumble offers a welcoming and fun environment for beginners to learn boxing fundamentals. (Avid boxers, on the other hand, may find the smaller bags limiting for body and headshots.)
Studios often provide free introductory classes for those new to boxing, teaching the number system trainers use for each punch.
Alongside boxing, you'll also get familiar with the weight training element, which includes a fully-equipped strength bench and weighted brass knuckles typically used in the abs portion and the Rumble round.
For those sensitive to bright lights and loud noises, be aware that this workout features plenty of both. Earplugs are available at the front desk if needed.
You'll need sneakers, workout attire, boxing gloves, and wraps.
While gloves can be rented for free for your first class, you'll need to purchase wraps (which you keep). You can continue to rent gloves or buy your own.
Having taken numerous boxing classes, I've tried many gloves and prefer those from Tussel Gear, a female-founded brand that allows you to easily grab water or towel off between rounds without removing your gloves.
It's also worth mentioning that Rumble's workouts target different body parts (upper, lower, abs, full body) depending on the day, ensuring balanced workouts that allow muscles to rest.
If you prefer to separate strength and cardio days, check your local Rumble studio for other classes like 30-minute boxing-only or strength-only sessions.
While your first class is complimentary, Rumble memberships can be pricey.
Rates vary by location, with unlimited memberships ranging from $179 to $299 per month, and a five-class pack costing $159 to $190 (with a 45-day expiration).
A complete breakdown of class offerings is available here.
Remember, you'll also need gear, particularly boxing gloves and wraps.
Wink boxing gloves sold at studios can cost up to $90, while convenient quick wraps (like fingerless padded gloves) can reach $25. Don't forget the stylish Rumble-branded apparel, including beanies, tanks, and claw clips.
Who Is Rumble For?
Rumble trainer Stephanie Raphael believes the workout suits everyone, saying, "If you are drawn to amazing music, an energetic atmosphere, and a strong supportive community, Rumble is the place for you."
Her tip for newcomers? "Choose a spot in the front! Though it might seem intimidating, it provides a clear view of your trainer and the projected guides," she advises.
In my view, the class is perfect for those interested in boxing without prior experience or anyone seeking a workout combining cardio and strength training.
Rumble is also ideal for those seeking a fun way to stay fit. Even seasoned boxers will find the classes enjoyable and challenging, with trainers offering ways to enhance your workout.
The Bottom Line
For me, Rumble consistently delivers a fantastic and enjoyable workout. It challenges both my mind and body, building stamina, confidence, grit, and muscle.
I'm about to attend my 150th class—so are you ready to Rumbleeeee?
