UAE residents can earn up to Dh300 per kilogram they shed as the annual weight loss challenge returns this February.

Now in its fifth edition, the RAK Biggest Weight Loss Challenge (RBWLC) will take place over 12 weeks, running from February 21 to May 22.

Registrations are now open, and entry for participants is completely free. This year, a new category has been introduced to encourage families to take on the challenge together.

For the ‘physical category,’ the top-performing male and female participants will be awarded cash prizes of Dh300, Dh200, and Dh100 per kilogram of weight they lose.

Meanwhile, the ‘virtual category’ offers a range of non-cash rewards such as staycations, health packages, dining vouchers, and gym memberships.

Data from RAK Hospital shows that nearly 40 percent of adults and children in the UAE suffer from obesity, contributing to an increase in chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

“Our initiative has garnered a great deal of interest, not just within the UAE but internationally as well, with participants from various countries showing enthusiasm for joining.

We are already exploring ways to expand the challenge to include a broader audience,” shared Dr. Raza Siddiqui, executive director of RAK Hospital.

The newly introduced ‘family category’ is designed for parents, children, and extended family members to join forces.

Families with at least three participants can register in either the physical or virtual challenge. The family that achieves the highest average weight loss will receive lifestyle vouchers.

There are also exclusive prizes set aside for couples.

To compete in the physical category, participants must undergo weigh-ins at RAK Hospital at the start and end of the program. For the virtual track, participants can complete their weigh-ins at a local clinic.

The corporate team challenge measures the average weight loss of the top 10 employees in each team to determine the winner.

Schools are also invited to join the competition, with teams of 10 or more staff members eligible to participate.

The school with the lowest average BMI among its students (both boys and girls) will also be recognized, with trophies awarded in these categories.

Last year, over 18,000 individuals participated in the challenge, with Dh40,000 in cash awarded to winners. One 31-year-old expatriate achieved an incredible weight loss of over 30kg and took home Dh9,000.
