Standing at the entrance of your first climbing gym, you might be feeling those pre-adventure jitters.

What if you're terrible at this whole rock climbing thing? What if heights make you queasy?

What if you discover you hate it—or worse, become completely obsessed and watch your free time and bank account disappear into this vertical world?

Fair warning to anyone with addictive tendencies: climbing can be seriously habit-forming.

If you'd rather spend your money on collectibles and keep your weekends free for Netflix binges, consider this your exit ramp. Once you start, you might not want to stop.

For everyone else, relax. Climbing can be whatever you want it to be—a monthly adventure, an annual challenge, or a one-time experience.

It works as a first date activity, weekly workout, seasonal hobby, or life-changing passion. There's no wrong way to approach it.

Here are seven insider tips to ensure your first day goes smoothly, regardless of where climbing takes you next.

Your ideal gym buddy is…

1. Cover Those Legs

You're about to spend an hour and a half bumping your knees against plastic holds. Long pants are your best defense against looking like you survived a small explosion when you return to the office Monday morning.

Fitted joggers or leggings work especially well if you plan to try rope climbing—basketball shorts have an unfortunate habit of bunching up under a harness.

2. You Control Your Limits

You're an adult, and nobody can force you to do anything. Afraid of heights? Feel free to stop halfway up the wall.

This applies whether you're bouldering or doing roped climbs. When you're tired and ready to come down, do it.

If someone pressures you to keep going, a loud "You can't tell me what to do!" usually ends the conversation. When bouldering, simply jump down or climb back down whenever you want.

3. Nobody's Judging Your Performance

It's natural to feel self-conscious in an unfamiliar environment, especially when you're the one making all the noise and taking all the falls.

But here's the truth: nobody cares how well or poorly you climb. Everyone else is focused on their own projects, admiring their muscles in the mirror, or wondering if their gym crush is working today. You're invisible, so enjoy the freedom.

4. Ignore the Color Rules (For Now)

Soon enough, people will tell you that you should only use holds of the same color—that's called "staying on route."

While this matters for experienced climbers working on progression, it doesn't apply to beginners.

You're here to have fun, not follow arbitrary rules. If that bright pink hold looks appealing, grab it and keep climbing without shame.

5. Chalk Makes Everything Better

Most gyms sell or loan chalk bags. Use one. Like climbing shoes, chalk is genuinely performance-enhancing.

It dramatically improves grip and reduces effort, letting you climb longer and with better control. Plus, nothing broadcasts "I just went climbing!" quite like chalky handprints all over your clothes at lunch.

6. It's Okay Not to Love It

Plenty of people become climbing fanatics, but most of the world's population doesn't. Don't let friends or partners pressure you into falling in love with their sport.

It can be their passion without becoming yours—and that's perfectly fine. If you don't want to push your limits, try harder routes, or be "braver," then don't. Just have fun and remember what legendary climber Alex Lowe said: "The best climber in the world is the one having the most fun."

7. Clean Up Before You Leave

You just spent hours touching the same holds as countless other people with questionable hand hygiene. Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving the gym.

If you used rental shoes, give your feet a good scrub too before putting on your street shoes. Your future self will thank you.

Remember, climbing is supposed to be fun. Don't overthink it, don't worry about looking foolish, and don't feel pressured to become the next great climbing phenomenon.

Just show up, try your best, and see what happens. You might surprise yourself.
