Home gyms often bring to mind uninspiring visuals—neutral palettes, lackluster materials, and little to no design character.
While practical and functional, they often fail to align with the aesthetic appeal of the rest of the home. Yet, the home gyms highlighted in the AD archives defy these tropes.
They are warm, inviting, and seamlessly integrated into their spaces, beautifully enhancing the homes they reside in.
A Minimalist Gym & Yoga Room
In Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills, a previously under-utilized private terrace was transformed into a rooftop bar perfect for sundowners, thanks to NaaV Studio.
Originally defined by a plain glass railing and little else, this space was reimagined by architect Varsha Reddy and landscape designer Rohit Mirdoddi, who collaborated to meet the homeowners’ desire for an area suitable for entertaining.
The gym and yoga room, featuring mustard-hued sandstone floors that continue onto the walls, maintains a distinct identity while remaining visually tied to the terrace.
A cane installation on the ceiling complements the crisscross wooden flooring. Light misted windows soften bright daylight but can be fully opened to welcome the breeze, blending practicality and elegance.
A Warm, Wooden Sanctuary
When architect and designer Ayesha Puri Kanoria designed her family home in Mumbai, she prioritized the individual needs of each family member.
Besides daily living requirements, the home had to accommodate entertaining and fitness needs within its 1,500 square feet—originally a two-bedroom apartment in a high-rise.
The result? A gym that seamlessly integrates into the home’s overall design while still providing full functionality.
The warm wooden minimalism stands in stark contrast to the typical sterile gym aesthetic. Transitioning from the gym to the living and dining areas, the calm, natural vibe is maintained with beige stone flooring and textured white walls.
A Plaid Paradise
This Minnesota home pays homage to its owners’ colorful heritage in India.
Filled with serene Ganesha paintings, vibrant jewel-toned decor, and a striking, oversized rendition of the first Vogue India cover, the interiors—crafted by designer Heather Peterson—flawlessly merge global influences.
The home gym is no exception, thoughtfully decorated with bold blue plaid wallpaper and custom blue-and-orange window treatments.
“If they want to turn it back into a bedroom someday, they already have a great starting point!” Peterson remarks with a smile.
These unique home gyms challenge the notion that fitness spaces must lack charm, proving instead that they can be extensions of a home’s personality and aesthetic.
