Rory McIlroy has a remarkable opportunity to claim his first Masters title in Augusta on April 13, and such a victory would make history in several significant ways.
Firstly, winning the Masters would complete McIlroy's Grand Slam, an achievement that involves winning all four major championships. McIlroy has already secured victories at the U.S. Open (2011), the PGA Championship (2012, 2014), and the Open Championship (2014).
If he adds the Masters to his record, he would join an exclusive group as the sixth golfer to achieve a Grand Slam.
Other legendary players who have completed this feat include Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.
Additionally, McIlroy’s win at the 2025 Masters would be historic in another way.
He would become the first player to win the tournament despite having more than one double-bogey since Craig Stadler accomplished this back in 1982. Early on, it seemed the odds were against him.
After the first round, Golf Monthly’s Mike Hall predicted McIlroy would need to “defy history” to claim victory.
The outlook remained uncertain after Round 2, but McIlroy delivered an impressive performance in Round 3, finishing the day at the top of the leaderboard.
Finally, a Masters victory on April 13 would also make history for the prize money involved.
According to People magazine, the 2025 Masters’ prize pool of $21 million is the highest to date. Based on the PGA Tour’s payout structure, the tournament winner will take home $4.2 million, marking a record-breaking payout.
With his sights set on the Masters, McIlroy has the chance to achieve greatness while etching his name into golf history.
