Water sports enthusiasts in Abu Dhabi and across the UAE have good news to celebrate as the world's largest and most advanced artificial wave facility is set to launch in October 2024.

Located on Hudayriyat Island, this vast facility is just one component of a larger Modon master plan, which also includes the region's first velodrome and the largest urban park in Abu Dhabi.

Situated a bridge away from Al Bateen, Surf Abu Dhabi will be near attractions such as the Trail X wheel world utopia, Circuit X's lip trick and half-pipe haven, as well as a beachfront outdoor gym.

Additionally, there are numerous sports courts, the indoor 321 Sports activity center, a rock climbing wall, an elevated rope assault course, and OCR—the UAE's largest permanent obstacle course—now open for outdoor fitness enthusiasts.

Surf’s up

After detailed examination earlier this year, the What’s On board sport correspondent described Surf Abu Dhabi as a “gnarly corduroy monster factory.”

This impressive description is credited to its design collaboration with an organization led by pro surfing legend and 11-time World Surf League champion, Kelly Slater's Wave Co.

The facility can host major tour competitions and features the world's longest artificial ride, largest barrel, and biggest man-made wave pool.

It's not just for experienced surfers; beginners and aspiring surfers can also enjoy the experience with no risk of injury from sandbars.

This will undoubtedly make it one of the premier surfing destinations in the UAE.

Up cycling

Scheduled to open in 2025, Velodrome Abu Dhabi will feature the region's first UCI Category 1 indoor cycling track, capable of hosting international championships and various track-based competitions.

Notable features include a rooftop track with a 600-meter cycling incline along the external walls, providing a stunning 360-degree view of Hudayriyat and Abu Dhabi's iconic skyline.

Parks ‘n’ Rec

For those preferring slower-paced outdoor activities, the development will include a 2.25 million square meter urban park, the emirate's largest of its kind.

The park will bring visitors closer to nature with amenities like an elevated cycling track, mangrove walk, eco-farming space, food and beverage outlets, playgrounds, and an events valley for diverse activities.

The rest

The finalized Hudayriyat development will feature luxurious residential properties nestled within two hill communities, offering scenic elevated desert island views.

Additionally, the city will gain 53.5 kilometers of enhanced coastline, with 16 kilometers dedicated to new beaches.

Jassem Bu Ataba Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Department of Finance, Abu Dhabi, and Chairman of Modon Properties, stated that “the master plan aligns with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the follow-up of H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive Council, to establish Abu Dhabi as a leader in innovative urban development.”
