The illustrious Henri Delaunay Trophy might be the ultimate accolade of this summer's European Championship, but players have their eyes on another prize too—the Golden Boot for the top scorer.

Legends like Gerd Muller, Marco van Basten, Alan Shearer, and Fernando Torres have all clinched this honor in the past. Who will join them this year?

Here are some top contenders, as assessed by BBC Sport:

Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)

Romelu Lukaku is a favorite after scoring 14 goals to set a new record for a single European Championship qualifying campaign.

The 31-year-old is Belgium’s all-time leading scorer with 83 goals in 114 games. This summer's Euros will be his sixth major tournament.

He bagged the Bronze Boot at the 2018 World Cup, netting four times in seven appearances.

Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)

Cody Gakpo is the main Dutch contender for the Golden Boot.

The Liverpool forward was their top scorer at the 2022 World Cup with three goals, having scored in every group game.

The 25-year-old has nine goals in 23 international appearances.

Gianluca Scamacca (Italy)

Premier League fans might remember Gianluca Scamacca from his brief stint at West Ham during the 2022-23 season, where he netted just three league goals.

However, the 25-year-old has found his form again with Atalanta, scoring 19 goals across all competitions and helping them win the Europa League.

He scored his first goal for Italy in their qualifying match against England at Wembley.

Robert Lewandowski (Poland)

Poland’s Robert Lewandowski knows where the goal is.

The 35-year-old is Poland’s top scorer with 82 goals in 148 appearances and has scored over 600 goals for club and country during his 19-year career.

After scoring three times in three matches at Euro 2020, this summer's Euros will be his sixth major international tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Cristiano Ronaldo needs no introduction. At 39, he shows little sign of slowing down.

With 128 goals, he’s the all-time top scorer in international football and has 206 caps for Portugal.

This summer will mark his 12th international tournament, offering him a chance to win back-to-back Golden Boots after topping the Euro 2020 scoring charts with five goals.

Harry Kane (England)

England’s captain and all-time top scorer Harry Kane will be crucial to their hopes of ending a 58-year title drought.

He comes off a prolific season with Bayern Munich, where he scored 45 goals in 45 games.

Despite his personal success, Bayern ended the season without a trophy, so Kane is still chasing his first major career honor.

Kylian Mbappe (France)

Kylian Mbappe, France's prolific striker, is the bookmakers' favorite to be top scorer at Euro 2024.

At just 25, he has already scored 46 goals in 77 appearances for Les Bleus.

Mbappe won the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup with eight goals, including a hat-trick in the dramatic final against Argentina.

Rasmus Hojlund (Denmark)

Rasmus Hojlund is a rising star in Danish football. He made an immediate impact with a hat-trick on his international debut in a European qualifier against Finland.

The 21-year-old finished the campaign as Denmark’s top scorer with seven goals in eight matches.

He joined Manchester United for £72m and scored 16 goals in 43 games in all competitions, helping the Red Devils win the FA Cup.

Scott McTominay (Scotland)

Scott McTominay was instrumental in Scotland’s successful qualifying campaign.

The 27-year-old was Scotland’s top scorer with seven goals, trailing only Lukaku, Kane, and Ronaldo in the overall charts.

He heads to Germany buoyed after helping Manchester United clinch the FA Cup.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (Serbia)

Aleksandar Mitrovic is a key figure for Serbia as they prepare for their first European Championship as an independent nation.

The 29-year-old is Serbia’s top scorer with 57 goals in 89 appearances and led their scoring in qualifying with five goals.

After moving to the Saudi Pro League, Mitrovic scored 39 goals in 42 games for Al Hilal, leading them to the title.

Zeki Amdouni (Switzerland)

Zeki Amdouni emerged as a standout player during the European qualifiers, netting six goals in just five matches to help Switzerland secure their spot in a major tournament for the sixth consecutive time.

Despite having only advanced past the Round of 16 once—reaching the quarter-finals in Euro 2020—Switzerland will rely heavily on Amdouni.

The forward, who scored six goals across 36 games for Burnley last season, is expected to play a crucial role in their 2024 campaign.

Alvaro Morata (Spain)

Alvaro Morata will not only lead Spain's attack but also serve as the team's captain as they aim for their third European Championship title.

The seasoned Atletico Madrid striker, who played for Chelsea from 2017 to 2020, has an impressive record of 34 goals in 74 international appearances.

Notably, no other player in Spain's Euro 2024 squad has reached double figures in goals.

Niclas Fullkrug (Germany)

Niclas Fullkrug may have made his international debut at 29, but he has certainly capitalized on the opportunity.

Now 31 and playing for Borussia Dortmund, Fullkrug has scored 11 goals in 15 international matches and is set to lead the host nation's attack this summer.

His 15 goals last season were instrumental in Dortmund's run to the Champions League final, where they were ultimately defeated 2-0 by Real Madrid.
