Why is it important to focus on dieting and getting healthy? Because your body is not just your home, but also your way of navigating life.
It could be the jeans that no longer fit, the stairs that leave you winded, or a subtle feeling that something isn’t quite right. For some, the realization comes softly, while for others, like Jan Wolfs, it arrives with greater force.
Eating well and prioritizing health isn’t about striving for perfection. It’s about reclaiming control, having the energy to fully engage in life, the strength to overcome challenges, and the clarity to make meaningful decisions.
At Gulf News, we highlight individuals who’ve embraced change—not through trendy solutions or filters, but through dedication, focus, and a commitment to improving their lives.
Take Jan Wolfs, a 34-year-old American who has been living in Dubai since 2019. Standing at 189 cm and once weighing 115 kg, his wake-up call occurred during the Covid lockdowns.
“I just felt overall fat and unhealthy,” he shared. However, when he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease two years ago, it cemented his decision to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Today, Jan has shed 17 kilograms and continues to make progress. Through intermittent fasting, consistent exercise, and a balanced mindset, he’s aiming for his goal weight of 92–94 kg. But more importantly, he feels stronger, healthier, and more in control of his life.
How Did Jan Achieve This Shift?
The foundation of Jan’s transformation is intermittent fasting, a method he credits not only for weight loss but also for managing his Crohn’s disease.
Initially, he followed the 16:8 approach, fasting for 16 hours and eating during an 8-hour window (12 pm to 8 pm).
Over time, he tightened his schedule, progressing to an 18:6 routine (eating from 2 pm to 8 pm) and occasionally adapting to a 20:4 schedule, where all meals fit into a four-hour timeframe from 4 pm to 8 pm.
“I read about its benefits for Crohn’s disease and weight loss. It seemed logical to give it a shot,” Jan said.
Despite the strict eating schedule, he allows himself to enjoy the foods he loves during his eating window. For the first six months, he maintained unwavering discipline—with no indulgences, even on weekends.
Thanks to that focus, he dropped from 115 kg to 98 kg and is steadily approaching his ideal weight.
Nowadays, Jan is more flexible. “If we go out for dinner or drinks on the weekends, I allow myself to enjoy it,” he explains, balancing his progress with occasional indulgences.
Adding Physical Activity to the Plan
At first, Jan didn’t prioritize exercise, but like many on a weight loss journey, he hit a plateau. “I made great progress with intermittent fasting alone, but then I reached a point where things stalled,” he explained. That’s when he realized it was time to elevate his efforts.
Instead of feeling discouraged, Jan adjusted his routine to include regular workouts. He integrated a mix of cardio and weightlifting into his weekly schedule, aiming to not only burn calories but also build strength and stamina.
“It felt great to sweat again,” he said. “It reminded me of how strong and capable I used to feel before the weight crept up.”
Jan also rekindled his love for basketball. Every weekend, you’ll find him on the court as part of a local league in Dubai.
For Jan, basketball is more than just physical activity; it’s a source of joy, community, and competition. “It’s not just exercise,” he says. “It’s something I genuinely look forward to.” The fast-paced games keep him active and fuel his competitive energy.
Progress Beyond the Scale
While his initial weight loss was rapid, the rate has slowed—but Jan isn’t frustrated by it. “The weight isn’t coming off as quickly now, and that’s okay,” he shares. “Some of the fat is probably being replaced with muscle, or at least that’s what I tell myself!” he jokes.
Managing his Crohn’s disease has been a priority, but consistent movement and a structured routine have given him a greater sense of control over his condition. What Jan is building goes far beyond dieting or exercising; he’s cultivating a lifestyle grounded in balance and flexibility.
It’s a life where structure and enjoyment coexist, and where health feels like a reward rather than a burden.
