How to pick the right distance

Go Sprint (5K) if you want:

  • A shorter day with a sharp challenge

  • A realistic first attempt at obstacles and pacing

Go Super (10K) if you want:

  • A bigger stamina test

  • More time under fatigue, which is where grip and legs usually get exposed

Race-week training: what actually helps (without overcomplicating it)

If your goal is to show up confident and finish strong, focus on these four priorities:

1) Grip and pulling strength

Obstacles often punish weak hands and upper back.

  • Dead hangs (accumulate time)

  • Rows (cables, dumbbells, or rings)

  • Farmer carries (heavy, controlled walks)

2) Legs that can handle repeated effort

You want strength endurance, not just max strength.

  • Step-ups or lunges

  • Squats at moderate weight for higher reps

  • Short hill intervals or incline treadmill walks

3) Engine work that matches the stop-start nature of obstacles

Try intervals that simulate “run, work, recover”:

  • 2–4 minutes steady cardio + 30–60 seconds hard effort

  • Repeat 6–10 rounds

If you enjoy coached conditioning that blends strength and cardio, CrossHiit classes can be a practical way to train the mix you’ll need.

4) A simple recovery plan

Do not “win” training week and lose race day.

  • Keep one day light (easy cardio + mobility)

  • Sleep becomes training this week

  • Hydrate consistently, not just the night before

What to bring on the day

Keep it simple and practical:

  • Shoes you trust for uneven ground and grip

  • A change of clothes for after

  • Water and a snack for before and after your race window

  • A small towel if you want one for the car ride home

Want a structured pathway for obstacle-style fitness?

Obstacle racing overlaps heavily with functional endurance. If you like a clear performance framework and coached sessions, HYROX classes can build the strength-endurance base that carries over well to events like this.
