A Shift Toward Healthier Choices in India

India is witnessing a growing trend of people striving to adopt healthier lifestyles. Many individuals are joining gyms or taking up activities to stay active.

However, experts highlight the importance of addressing overall well-being, both physical and mental.

Even small changes, such as taking a morning walk in your local park, cycling around the neighborhood, or enjoying a game of cricket with friends, can result in noticeable health benefits. But how can one begin?

This World Health Day, we spoke with experts to guide you on starting your fitness journey today.

"Fitness Should Be a Priority," Says Dr. Pradyumna Tembhekar

Dr. Pradyumna Tembhekar, a sports medicine and orthopedic physician, emphasizes that fitness is one of the most neglected aspects of well-being.

"Whenever people say they don't have time for fitness, what they really mean is they're not making it a priority,” Dr. Tembhekar remarks. “Once we enter our 30s and 40s, metabolism slows, bones weaken, and energy levels dip. Staying physically active, even in small ways, becomes essential."

Dr. Tembhekar advises focusing on consistency above all else. "It’s not about achieving perfection.

Start with small steps, like walking daily, stretching every morning, or playing badminton weekly. Over time, these habits enhance your mindset, making you stronger, sharper, and more resilient.”

Don't Overlook Nutrition and Hydration

Physical activity is just one part of the equation for a healthier lifestyle. Proper nutrition and hydration are equally important for maintaining physical and mental health.

Dr. Bodhisattva Dass, physiotherapist for the Kalinga Lancers sports team, suggests rethinking how people approach diets. "Your diet is essentially your daily source of energy.

It should contain a balance of proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, and other crucial nutrients," he explains.

He also stresses the importance of staying hydrated. "Dehydration impacts digestion, leaving you feeling bloated, fatigued, or prone to cramps.

A small adjustment, like drinking more water, can improve how you feel overall."

Sports Teach Discipline and Life Skills

Engaging in sports is not just about staying active; it also instills valuable life skills like discipline and time management, which can be applied to both personal and professional growth.

According to Savio D’souza, a fitness coach, sports can even improve physical abilities that aid with daily activities.

"Sports such as cricket and table tennis enhance hand-eye coordination, which makes everyday tasks easier and safer. Even something like running can build endurance, strengthen your heart, and improve muscle tone.”

Sports as a Solution for Mental Health Challenges

Life today is undeniably stressful. However, playing sports can effectively combat anxiety and improve sleep quality.

Moderate to high-intensity activities trigger the release of endorphins, often referred to as "happy hormones," which elevate mood and alleviate stress.

Regular exercise can also regulate sleep patterns, helping individuals fall asleep more quickly and enjoy deeper, uninterrupted rest.

Participating in team sports like football, volleyball, or cricket can positively impact your mental health by boosting social interaction.

An active social life is an excellent way to address feelings of anxiety and depression.

Research even indicates that for some individuals, regular exercise can be as beneficial as antidepressant medications.

Nasir Ali, Founder and CEO of Gallant Sports, emphasizes the importance of supportive environments. "We need to create infrastructure that motivates people to move.

When communities have access to better facilities, individuals of all ages and abilities are more likely to engage in physical activities.”

Take the First Step

Whether it’s through regular walks, joining a local sports team, or drinking more water, small adjustments to your daily routine can make a big impact on your health.

Prioritizing fitness, nutrition, and mental well-being doesn't just improve how you feel physically but also leads to a happier and more focused mindset. Why not take that step today?
